Hollywood <3 opensource : Ton Roosendaal interview

Postby philippejadin » Wed Oct 17, 2012 11:50 am

As part of the "Hollywood <3 opensource" project, we (Carlos Padial, Simón Vialás Fernández, Cédric Demiddeleer and myself) made an interview of Ton Roosendaal (blender.org) this monday.

The shooting went well, altough the conditions for filming were not ideal : lot of people from the conference at the foundation, and varying sun light.
We did two angles, one close shot (gh1) and one wider angle (elphel). Audio is as good as we could get and I'd say it's clean.

We ended up having a very interesting discussion lasting 40 minutes. Ton has been very helpful and friendly during this day already packed for him.

We talked about his story, the story of Blender, the future of opensource, the positive implications, Hollywood, licences, etc... We can learn from Ton. I don't want to summarize badly what he told us, but what I understood that day is that open source can be a pragmatic, successful and lasting choice. That a no-compromise approach to open source might be the "right thing". Blender future was once compromised by a company going bankrupt, open source licencing and crowd funding saved the source code from disapearing for ever, and brought a future-proof project that anyone can rely on.

The atmosphere at the institute was also refreshing (relaxed, hard working, fun, you name it). I guess this has to do with Ton's personality.

It was also the occasion to spend time with Carlos and Simon, discussing licencing issues, how they relate to our project in the light of Blender's case. Meeting two other Apertus members was a great part of the success of this day!

Here you can watch the first 3 minutes of the interview : http://youtu.be/0MLZbUQfo-k

The second angle of view (Elphel) will be provided later, and we'll sync everything with the external audio.

Wonderful start to a great project!

I guess the reason nobody replies here is just that we all expressed our gratitude via email directly already ;)

Wonderful! Great image - great sound. Too bad I couldn't join that day, but we're already planning a second shoot with Philippe when we attend 'how-do-you-do' http://howdoyoudo.creativemediadays.be/speakers

There are some people we'd like to interview in between our own presentation ;-)
More on that later!

This reminds me we should soon make the final decision how to name this project. Having differently named references to the project everywhere creates a bit of confusion I am afraid.

Hello, is it possible to have the Spanish translation of interviews Ton Roosendaal? or the English text of "Blender vs the rest"?

I would post it and share it on blenderchevere.org.ve /

Best regards. :)
