Phase 1 Report & AXIOM Beta Production Status

Submitted by Sebastian on Wed, 03/02/2016 - 16:25

The Phase 1 for the AXIOM Beta has been completed in the first week of February and in total we received the funds of 123 Phase 1 payments (unfortunately not all 500 crowdfunding camera supporters followed through). This will not allow us to get the 500 pieces volume deals, but the 100+ volume order will still give us quite significant discounts for a number of key items - such as the sensor, which is by far the most expensive single component. The estimated price increase of the at-cost prices for those 123 backers should be quite small (see our previous price estimate). Also we will try our best to save cost in other areas to further reduce the at-cost prices.

Production Status

We have successfully completed the production of the first 5 AXIOM Beta developer kits. Two cameras are used for in house development and testing and 3 have been provided to core developers (like Magic Lantern). As every electronic component is currently picked and placed on the boards by hand, the effort required to build one AXIOM Beta from start to finish is around 1 man week. We will produce around 15 - 20 developer kits in total for those backers who expressed interest in receiving an early adopter kit. If you are a Phase 1 backer and have not expressed interest in getting your hardware early in a past survey, please contact us.

Hi,

I decided against going forward with axiom camera. Obviously I have made the initial investment of €350. I was wondering if I could sell it or get some alternatives for that instead.

Hi Krishna bala, I'm a crowdfunder too, but I was not able to do the initial investment that was opening to some axiom hardware at the cowdfunding campaign time (I had just spent several thousand euros in equipment at this time, so it was bad timed for me…), but the more time goes, the more I dream for an axiom, the more I discover I will need it, and the more I regret to not having done that investment. So I'm wondering if I could buy it. I don't know if the Axiom guys would be OK with that but it looks like they will have more chance to get more money (= selling a whole product) with me than with you. Krishna bala, please contact me at "contact@<put here my pseudo>.net" so we can talk about it.

I am surprised to see some people are kinda backing off from this opportunity, which I find rather sad... I mean, I have ZERO experience with cameras, I am risking all my money on this. Years ago I have funded a similar startup of a MIDI sequencer while no one was keen to pay for "a drawing". Later on I got the sequencer for half price as a backer (www.genoqs.com) and I was so proud to find out that the guys behind it were two Romanians living in Germany. Up till now it is still the best hardware MIDZi sequencer out there, a unique piece of hardware, a very satisfying tool for musicians... I am 100% sure that the Axiom cameras will allow many poorer people to fulfill their movie making ambitions and make them proud and happy they contributed to this! Shame on the rest of the initial backers who did not paid for the 1st phase as it would have become cheaper for all of us! I guess many of those who did not contribute do not realise what an Axiom product will mean in terms of performance and/or affordability!

I am also interested to sell my share...I invested 500€...
Its not that I don't believe in the project but I am film maker and a photographer but not that technically apt. I cannot write code and I was hoping for things like using my Canon lenses with an autofocus system etc but this first all needs to be developed still by people in the open source community and I am not sure if this will happen or how long it will take etc.
Maybe the Gamma camera is more my thing but I have cameras I can use now already,
So if anyone is interested to take over my share, please let me know,
kindly
Raphael

You don't have to be a programmer to help Apertus. There are so many task that are not related to programming or Hardware Developing. When you even can help with example Documentation, Video Tutorial how to use a specified parameter, translating to another language, or even Promoting Apertus on events that could help too. sadly the development is slow so some Features takes time....

Dan,
I agree. I also feel a bit bad about, it is not that i don't want to back this idea or the project. I did invest 500€ which is also not nothing. Part of my decision but my decision can also change; is that 1. i made a lot of investment, backing into indiegogo and kickstarter projects and lot of them didn't pay out or didn't get what was promised. I spend a few thousand € on camera stability gear from a small and innovative Swedish company, 1st step was a mechanical device and the 2nd part small motors would be added for an up price. the 2nd part was never realized, i am still waiting for it to happen and its 2 years later now. a lot of money gone in a system that could have been one of the best stabilizers out, the concept was excellent and is partly copied now by bigger companies with bigger budgets for r&d. but my money is gone basically. and it happened with lots of other projects alike.
I have become much more cautious with crowdfunding in the mean time.
Well, this is one part,
the other part is that i think i don't understand it the whole process anymore. like i wrote, I am not a techwiz i cannot program anything. i already have difficulties with my F55. which was a very expensive camera but the menus are a drag. for me anyway.
I was looking for something that is smaller and more mobile, this i think will still be the case but am looking for a camera that i can use all my canon glass one and still do autofocus on, ideally with touch. like the new Canon camera...this would be a dream.
and i think this camera won't have that...maybe one day if developers will make that happen. but who and when? I am not one of them, if i could do it i would but cannot....
maybe its communication. i know the guys really tried but maybe one has to contact these first backers again...

Just to share my feelings

Just to share my feelings about this. To me it seems that Axiom team is fulfilling their passion with this project, and not after your money for false kickstarter. I trust their word and hard work they are doing to reach the goal. I found this Axiom Beta kickstarter project by following and testing Magic Lantern`s community and firmware development(for years) for Canon cams, and ML was THE reason I decided to take a risk to jump aboard (didn`t know nothing about Apertus or Axiom back then). And I´m not a programmer either, just a small one-man-band cinematographer who respects a good quality video and opportunity to have a chance for advanced tweaks in a future (if I`ll have time/brains to learn it). I´m one of 123, without regrets. And usually, if something is designed, build and tested in the middle- or northern Europe by adults, it`s worth of supporting ;)

Hi there,

It seems that many people who didn't go for phase 1 are selling their voucher. So I'm selling mine as well to anyone who wants to join this adventure. I'm one of the early adopter of AXIOM Beta Super35 (using CMV12000 image sensor) (delivery avr. 15, 2015) for 350 Euros.

Contact me here if you are interested : gab.n.maillard(at)gmail.com

-----------------------------------------------

To those who want to argue that I'm a false backer, I really don't care what you think about me.
Don't get me wrong. This kind of project is really amazing ! I can't imagine how hard it is to build something this big from almost nothing. I really loved the capability to reuse the sensor in the futur to update from beta to gamma, make everyone participate to such a big project... I guess many people backed for various good reasons.

However, they should have announced clearly the color from the beggining regarding the timeline. I backed this project in September 2014 and It was written at the time that the early bird Axiom beta would be shipped in April 2015.
Since they presented the Axiom Alpha, I thought most of the process (brainstorming, creating a working video camera) was already done.
Now, as a 3D designer (mechanical part, CAD) for almost 10 years, I understand you may have delays on a project. That can happen and I actually expected this. But not this long. We are now in April 2016.
I guess the timeline was too ambitious for something this big.
I wanted to use the Axiom Beta for my trip to Japan last year in July-August. I was traveling across the country and wanted good quality video to shoot because I didn't want to use Canon anymore. I had unfortunately to choose other options.

This is why, now, I really read thoroughly any indigogo/kickstarter/wemakeit project and I weight the pros and cons before backing.

I'm not here to debate. Everybody has his/her own reasons to keep supporting (or not) this project.

I just hope it will succeed. Because it deserves.
