AXIOM Alpha Progress Report

Submitted 12 years 4 weeks ago by Sebastian.
apertus° is opening up all the internal discussion about the Axiom Alpha prototype to the public and is currently seeking additional hardware developers. Read on to learn why and how. Release Early - or even before that On his blog, Philip Bloom recently wrote : “Please stop bringing out new cameras and stop announcing them. Just go back into your top secret bunkers and concentrate on refining and perfecting your current ones and ideas for your future ones. [...] I am a big fan of announcing... » Read more

Open Film Making News Portal Website

Submitted 12 years 1 month ago by Sebastian.
We are toying with the idea of forming a team to develop and maintain a news website about open source film making related topics. Basically a website like nofilmschool.com or libregraphicsworld.org but with a focus on the free/libre/open source/DIY side of film making and media creation which is currently not being covered anywhere. Outline The idea is to create a news website and maintain it with content like news/blog posts and articles about open source film making, related current events/... » Read more

Functional Dictator Breadboard Prototype

Submitted 12 years 1 month ago by Sebastian.
Dictator Interface Dictator: real buttons and knobs. The slogan of the Dictator is "real buttons and knobs" and that basically sums it up in 4 words. It means camera control with tactile feedback instead of or in addition to a touchscreen (which is very versatile but not desireable in some situtations). Not just old-school DOPs prefer having physical buttons to press :). The dicator will be an Axiom accessory but is also compatible with the Elphel camera. Read more about the Dictator on the... » Read more

apertus° is looking for an addition to our newsletter editor team

Submitted 12 years 2 months ago by Sebastian.
Every first week of the month, apertus° publishes a newsletter issue in English that is translated to several other languages - Spanish, French, Portuguese and Catalan. The bulletin is sent to around 600 subscribers worldwide and covers the most relevant activities of the apertus° association and apertus° company. How is the development of Axiom Alpha? What are the plans for the future? What are people digging up in their basements that can be helpful in the path to an Open Souce Cinema? And... » Read more

DIY Flourescent Area Light

Submitted 12 years 2 months ago by Sebastian.
Photographed using 2 Diva Lites by gregorfischer.photography (flickr.com Creative Commons) I love the Kinoflo Diva Lite - it provides soft but strong light and gives great texture to faces. Since I always have it at disposal and can use it whenever I want I took it for granted already. It was just in Geneva at the first global apertus° community meet up when I wanted to rent one for the apertus° booth that I discovered how incredibly expensive these are. So I started my research to find out... » Read more

The Final Step - Digital Cinema Projection - DCPs created with OpenDCP

Submitted 12 years 3 months ago by Sebastian.
The last step onto the Big Screen The very last step for post production of a digital cinema project is typically packing the finished film into a DCI compliant DCP ( Wikipedia: Digital Cinema Package ). This is THE standard playback format for video servers and is used in pretty much every digital projection cinema nowadays. While this last step sounds rather straightforward and simple, people regularly turn pale when they learn that post houses charge several thousands of dollars (USD) and... » Read more

New Open Hardware Concept: Cable Armour

Submitted 12 years 3 months ago by Sebastian.
Why has nobody come up with a versatile system how any cable connector that we use everyday can be properly protected? This Open Hardware Concept proposes a solution. We think the key here is simplicity. If you love your, cables protect them - with Cable A(r)mour ! » Read more

Lenses

Submitted 12 years 3 months ago by Sebastian.
This page and the information on it is related ONLY to the Elphel camera, NOT Axiom. Elphel 353 cameras have a C/CS mount which is basically just a female thread (nominally 1 inch/25 mm in diameter, with 32 threads per inch). The flange focal distance is 0.6900 in/17.526 mm for a C-mount. C-Mount (The letter "C" is said to stand for "cine") is common for 16mm lenses as well as machine vision, automation and specialised television applications. Which has lead to a very wide range of lenses to... » Read more

Why all the secrecy with Axiom?

Submitted 12 years 3 months ago by Sebastian.
apertus° is an open project with free people collaborating so why all the secrecy? Why not open all the discussion and details about Axiom and let everyone participate like it is common for open source projects? The following paragraph tries to explain our reasons. apertus° is currently at a major turning point. We are attempting to transform apertus° from a purely community driven project (with lots of great people but unfortunately no responsibility) into a commercial entity that emerges from... » Read more

Why Kickstarter moved closer to Axiom and at the same time further away

Submitted 12 years 3 months ago by Sebastian.
Kickstarter crosses the ocean When we drafted our plan for how to create Axiom, it was clear that we want to use the biggest, most successful and most widely known crowd funding platform on the planet for our crowd funding campaign: Kickstarter . But since Kickstarter was limited to US projects we had to consider doing some workarounds like asking a US based apertus° member to run the campaign in his name. But research showed that this could have ended quite badly with this particular helpful... » Read more
